11/7 CFB Preview: Appalachian State -1.5 vs. Coastal Carolina, Total 62.5
Appalachian State (4-4, 2-3) travels to face Coastal Carolina (4-4, 1-3), a Chanticleers team on a three-game skid. The Mountaineers are coming off two home wins, but can they carry their momentum on the road? Last year’s Sun Belt Player of the Year, QB Joey Aguilar, is rounding back into form for Appalachian State, averaging 290 passing yards over the past four weeks. The Mountaineers have also rediscovered their running game, averaging 180 yards per game in the last four weeks—a promising stat against a Coastal Carolina run defense that ranks among the bottom 10 in college football. Coastal’s defense has allowed opponents to average 258 rushing yards over their last five games, including a staggering 340 yards to a struggling Troy team last week.
This Chanticleers team appears to be unraveling. During their three-game losing streak, QB Ethan Vasko was benched, and though he will start tonight, his confidence may be shaken. Vasko should find some success against an Appalachian State defense with less-than-stellar numbers this season, though the Mountaineers have shown improvement, allowing only 20 and 26 points in their last two games.
Offenses have the upper hand in this matchup, and we expect Appalachian State to light up the scoreboard. While Coastal Carolina should score as well, they’re not firing on all cylinders and can’t be fully trusted to push the total over 62 points. Coastal is fading fast, while the Mountaineers are hitting their stride. The line shift in favor of Appalachian State seems justified, and we lean toward the Mountaineers.
